What to Pack for Paris in December: The Complete Paris Winter Packing List

Paris in December is pure magic—the City of Lights sparkles even brighter with festive holiday markets, glowing Christmas lights, and cozy Parisian cafĆ©s serving steamy cups of hot chocolate. While it’s one of my favorite times to visit, December also brings cold weather, rainy days, and the occasional extra cold days, so packing thoughtfully is key.

If you’re planning a winter trip to the French capital, this guide covers everything you need for your Paris packing list—from chic outer layers to comfortable shoes for the cobblestone streets.

Average Temperatures & What to Expect in Paris in December

The average temperatures in Paris during December range between 37°F (3°C) and 46°F (8°C). You can expect cold rain, gray skies, and occasional moments of blue skies when the Eiffel Tower glistens in the winter sun.

While a heat wave is unlikely this time of year, layering for chilly temperatures and cold winds is the best way to stay comfortable. The great thing about December is that you’ll find less crowds, shorter lines at museums, and a more relaxed pace as you stroll the streets of Paris.

Shoes For Paris In December

Since the weather can sometimes be rainy and icy, you want to ensure you pack the right shoes. If possible, you will want to pack at least one to two pairs of waterproof boots. Some suggestions would be one tall pair and one Chelsea or ankle boot.

You can also pack sneakers like VEJA, New Balance, or Adidas to blend in with the locals. If you are having dinner in the evenings, pack a nice pair of pumps, heels, or sparkly flats, but save them for inside only. Paris is full of cobblestone streets, so you don’t want to walk in these shoes on the icy cobblestones.

Paris Winter Fashion: Dressing Like French Women

Parisian women have mastered the art of looking elegant in any season, even during the coldest months. You’ll see a lot of Parisian women wearing neutral colors, timeless wool coats, and stylish shoes that handle the cobblestone streets with ease.

The main thing to remember is that French women value versatile pieces that layer well and never go out of style. Think of Coco Chanel’s philosophy—simplicity, quality, and timeless style.

Key Style Tips

A little black dress is always a great option for dinners or evenings out

Stick to neutral colors like black, camel, beige, and navy for an effortlessly chic Parisian style.

Add an extra layer like a trench coat, leather jacket, or long wool coat for warmth and polish.

Choose comfortable shoes over high heels—leather sneakers, black ankle boots, or knee-high boots are a good choice for exploring.

SHOP LAYERS

Packing layers for Paris in December is absolutely essential. The Parisian winter is known for its unpredictable cold weather, where chilly temperatures, cold rain, and bursts of blue skies can all happen in a single day. Layering allows you to adjust easily as you move from the cold streets of Paris into cozy Parisian cafƩs or warm museums.

Cold Weather Accessories For Paris

You also want to be prepared with all the cold-weather accessories you will need such as a cashmere scarf or gloves, hat, travel umbrella, and warm socks.

Thank you, Noelani! It’s nice to have confirmation that lug sole loafers will be a good sneaker/flats alternative. And I am ordering some merino wool knee-high socks as well. šŸ™‚

    Hi there,
I will be in Paris for the holidays and find your blog very helpful, thank you! I have already ordered the wool pants and bodysuits you posted.
In your post about December outfits, it seems you have a lot of outfits that have a jacket but no coat. Can I expect to be able to walk around Paris in December with for example a warm cashmere sweater and blazer & no coat as your outfits seem to suggest? Or would I plan to wear an overcoat for outside and check it upon arrival at my destination? Being a SoCal gal, cold weather is tough for me to plan for! So my question is should I plan to wear an over coat everyday and bring one that fits over my blazer, oversized knitwear and Chanel type jacket? Thanks!

  3. Michelle says:

We will be in Paris in late January (after trotting about England over the holidays and then Tunisia), so your December packing list is extremely helpful (I have already ordered the wool insoles šŸ™‚ ). I have a pair of lug-sole waterproof Blondo boots, but also want to pack a pair of comfortable shoes for walking about when it’s not raining. I do not wear sneakers (unless I am going to the gym) so I am thinking that a pair of lug sole loafers would work since they would be warmer than my usual flats and keep my feet drier if it’s a bit wet. Would loafers be a good choice? If so, are there any loafers with a thicker sole that you might recommend? Thank you! –Michelle

    • carol says:

I am with you on the sneakers! I keep wondering if I should bring my adidas sambas but I think they look too casual with the clothes I have planned, do not really get the sneakers with trousers look! I have limited space and think 2 pairs of boots are a better way to go…
