Dress Like a French Woman

A Parisian-inspired one-page style guide for effortless, everyday dressing.

There’s a quaint hotel tucked away on Rue Cassette in the heart of Saint Germain for your next trip to Paris. Hôtel l’Abbaye is a hotel I have walked by many times during my trips to Paris, and I have always had it on my list of places to stay, but it’s also one that books up quickly and is loved by locals and returning guests.

This past trip, I was lucky enough to secure a room for several nights, and it was worth the wait. The hotel is in a great location of Saint-Germain-des- Prés, close to cafés, and restaurants, and Jardin du Luxembourg is a short walk away.

Hôtel l’Abbaye in Saint Germain is almost hidden and tucked away behind wrought-iron gates. I love the fact it isn’t right there on the street, which helps to provide the quietness of the hotel. The entrance to the hotel is a little garden oasis of trees and greenery. I did stay during the holidays, so it was extra charming with twinkle lights and Christmas Trees.

There are 43 rooms which overlook a hidden garden in the middle courtyard. You can open your window first thing in the morning and hear the serenity of a beautiful fountain down below.

I arrived before check-in and the hotel was gracious to hold my luggage for me and also allowed me to eat breakfast in the restaurant with no charge.

The restaurant is in a beautiful glass-roof salon looking out into the garden. We enjoyed a very quaint French breakfast each morning and the restaurant is available from early morning into the late hours of the night. I even noticed locals coming into the restaurant several mornings for meetings or just to have breakfast.

History Of The Hotel

Hôtel l’Abbaye opened back in 1973 but originally sits on a former Benedictine convent. It was renovated back in the 1990s and not much has changed since then. However, the hotel is so incredibly charming, there isn’t anything that needs to be changed.

Location Of The Hotel

The hotel is ideally located right in the heart of Saint Germain and within close walking distance of the most iconic Parisian addresses. Cafés close by are Cafe de Flore, Les Deux Magots, and Le Bonaparte.

Several close restaurants are Pizza Chic, which I highly recommend and is just a few meters away. Also close are Ralph’s Paris, Laduree, and Aux Prés.

Down the road you can find Le Bon Marché, Saint Sulpice, and the Musée d’Orsay is only a 20-minute walk away.

The Rooms

There are 43 rooms within the hotel and we choose to stay in the Parisian, which is one of their classic rooms. The room was so cozy, charming, and beautifully decorated with a tasteful touch of French ambiance.

The room size was quite nice for Parisian standards for 2 people and had ample closet space for each of us. We had a double-size bed but you can always request two beds as well if you are traveling with someone else.

The bed was incredibly comfortable and the room was quiet while we slept. During the morning and early evening, we would open the window to the peaceful courtyard below.

The bathroom is a nice size and provides a bit of luxury with Diptyque products. There was also a Nespresso machine in the room and a kettle for coffee or tea, which is a nice perk for the morning when getting ready for the day.

Relaxation

One evening I went down to the living room which is off to the side of the lobby. A nice fire was going and I sat there, ordered a glass of wine, and just relaxed. It was a wonderful way to end the evening before bed.

Overall, I would stay at Hôtel l’Abbaye in Saint Germain again on my next trip to Paris. The charm, quietness, and beauty of the hotel are a step up from several other boutique hotels I’ve stayed at in the area.
