Île Saint-Louis Paris Guide: Where to Stay, Eat, and Shop
Tucked away in the heart of the Seine, Île Saint-Louis in Paris is one of the city’s most enchanting neighborhoods. Known for its cobblestone streets, historic architecture, boutique shops, and authentic Parisian cafés, this small island offers a timeless charm that feels worlds away from the busy boulevards. This past July, I had the chance to stay on Île Saint-Louis with my family for an entire month, which gave us the perfect opportunity to truly immerse ourselves in the island’s unique charm. From morning walks along the Seine to evenings spent at cozy neighborhood bistros, we discovered so many little details that make this part of Paris so special.
In this guide, I’m sharing my personal recommendations based on our stay—where to eat, shop, and simply enjoy the atmosphere—so you can experience all that Île Saint-Louis has to offer just as we did

Why Visit Île Saint-Louis?

Île Saint-Louis is the perfect place to experience la vie parisienne at a slower pace, while still being close to major Paris landmarks.
A Central Yet Peaceful Escape
Located in the 4th arrondissement, Île Saint-Louis sits right next to Notre-Dame Cathedral and is connected by several bridges. Despite its central location, the island offers a calm, residential feel. You won’t find the bustling traffic of the Champs-Élysées here; just serene streets and beautiful river views.
A Walk Through History
The island was developed in the 17th century and is known for its elegant hôtel particuliers (grand townhouses). Writers, musicians, and intellectuals have long been drawn to its quiet beauty. Simply strolling the Rue Saint-Louis en l’Île offers a glimpse of Paris’s history preserved in time.
Village-Like Atmosphere
With just a few main streets and charming quays, Île Saint-Louis feels like its own self-contained village. Visitors often comment that the island has a slower rhythm, perfect for enjoying long walks, coffee by the Seine, or boutique shopping without crowds.
Where to Stay on Île Saint-Louis

Finding a place to stay here allows you to wake up in the middle of Paris, with easy access to landmarks and the Seine at your doorstep. Here are the best hotels and apartments on Île Saint-Louis:
Boutique Hotels on Île Saint-Louis
- Hotel du Jeu de Paume
Once a royal tennis court, this 17th-century building has been transformed into a boutique hotel. With exposed beams, contemporary art, and a charming courtyard, it’s a great option for travelers who want both history and comfort. - Hotel Saint-Louis en l’Isle
A cozy, classic hotel with a warm atmosphere. Many rooms offer Seine views, making it perfect for a romantic Paris getaway. - Hotel de Lutèce
A 23-room boutique property that balances elegance with intimacy. Its prime location on Rue Saint-Louis en l’Île makes it easy to explore the island’s shops and cafés.

Many travelers choose Île Saint-Louis apartments to experience life like a Parisian. From studio rentals to luxury apartments with balconies over the Seine, there are options for every budget. We booked our apartment for the month through Guest Apartment Services.
Staying in an apartment also allows you to shop at local markets and cook your own French-inspired meals, and immerse yourself in daily life.
Best Restaurants on Île Saint-Louis

One of the highlights of visiting Île Saint-Louis is exploring its culinary scene. From legendary ice cream to charming bistros, here are the top places to eat on Île Saint-Louis:
Iconic Ice Cream: Berthillon

No guide to Île Saint-Louis is complete without mentioning Berthillon, the island’s most famous address. This family-run glacier has been serving artisanal ice cream since 1954. Flavors range from classics like vanilla and chocolate to seasonal fruit sorbets.
Expect lines on summer afternoons, but it’s well worth the wait. There are also several other places throughout the island that sell Berthillon and sometimes, although not always, have shorter lines.
Cozy Cafés and Bistros on Île Saint-Louis
Île Saint-Louis may be small, but it has no shortage of cozy Parisian bistros and charming cafés to discover. Tucked along its cobblestone streets, you’ll find welcoming spots perfect for starting your day with a café crème, enjoying a leisurely lunch, or lingering over a glass of wine in the evening.
Many of these establishments have been neighborhood favorites for decades, offering classic French dishes, warm service, and an authentic local atmosphere.
Le Saint-Régis Café

A quintessential Paris café, perfect for breakfast, coffee, or a glass of wine in the evening. Its location on the corner makes for excellent people-watching. This is our favorite café on the island at any time of day. The staff is welcoming, you can always count on the food, and the atmosphere is perfectly Parisian.
If you go for breakfast, I highly recommend the scrambled eggs, as they are some of the best in the city. However, if you are a late-night person, Saint-Regis is open until 2 AM.
Sorza

Sorza is a charming restaurant offering a mix of Italian and Mediterranean Cuisine, along with seasonal specials and a selection of French dishes. This is the perfect spot when you are craving fresh Italian in a beautiful setting.
The restaurant is small, but the dishes are truly outstanding here. I would make a reservation if possible, as the inside seating is limited.
Les Fous de l’Île

Les Fous de I’Île has undergone changes since I last ate here a year ago, and I discovered this summer that it’s now being referred to as a brewery. The decor on the inside is the same, but it doesn’t evoke the same feeling it once did.
I feel like it’s now catering more to tourists than the locals. The outside is utterly charming, though, so sit, have a coffee and croissant in the morning, and watch the city come alive.
Ha Noi 1988

Ha Noi 1988 (Île Saint-Louis) is a hidden gem serving some of the best pho in Paris, just steps from Notre-Dame Cathedral. Set in a cozy, vintage-inspired space that recreates the charm of 1980s Hanoi, this restaurant is beloved for its authentic Vietnamese flavors.
From steaming bowls of pho to fresh spring rolls and banh mi. With its warm service, intimate atmosphere, and prime location, it’s one of the top choices for travelers looking for Vietnamese food near Notre-Dame and a cozy dining spot on Île Saint-Louis.
Crêperie île Saint-Louis

Perfect for those times when you don’t want a heavy meal, head to Crêperie île Saint-Louis to tide you over. There are several crêperie stops on the island, but this one is a favorite. The owner, Ram, is incredibly nice, remembers your name, and even your order.
We made a stop here at least 3 times a week during our month-long stay. Sometimes, for lunch, crêpes and other times for dessert, crêpes.
Classic Dining Experiences on Île Saint-Louis
In addition to its cafés and wine bars, Île Saint-Louis also boasts several classic dining experiences that capture the timeless spirit of French cuisine. These establishments embody the charm of old Paris, offering not just a meal but an experience steeped in tradition and conviviality; perfect for those wanting to enjoy an authentic taste of French dining culture.
L’ilot Vaghe

L’Îlot Vache is a cozy French restaurant on Rue Saint-Louis en l’Île, named after the island’s historic moniker, Île aux Vaches. With its warm décor and charming terrace, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxed Parisian meal.
The menu features French classics like foie gras, gratinéed onion soup, duck confit, and roasted lamb shank, along with indulgent desserts such as chocolate mousse and crème brûlée. I highly recommend the French onion soup to start and end with the crème brûlée.
Aux Anysetiers du Roy

Aux Anysetiers du Roy is a cozy restaurant on Île Saint-Louis, located in a charming 17th-century building just steps from Notre-Dame Cathedral. Specializing in traditional Provençal cuisine, it’s a favorite for visitors seeking a romantic restaurant in Paris or an authentic French dining experience away from the crowds.
With its historic atmosphere and hearty flavors, Aux Anysetiers du Roy is one of the best restaurants near Notre-Dame and a must-visit for anyone exploring Île Saint-Louis.
Best Coffee on Île Saint-Louis
While Île Saint-Louis is known for its historic charm, it’s also home to several specialty coffee shops and to-go cafés that make it easy to grab a cup before strolling the quays or crossing to Notre-Dame Cathedral. Here are some of the best places for coffee on the island:

- NOIR Coffee – A sleek, minimalist specialty roastery serving expertly brewed espresso, cold brews, and matcha in a calm, design-forward space. Perfect for travelers searching for the best coffee shops near Notre-Dame.
- Minicafé – The smallest coffee shop in Paris, this micro-sized spot delivers big flavor with its lattes, dirty matcha, and sweet treats like brownies and mochi—an ideal to-go coffee stop on Île Saint-Louis. My personal favorite here is the Noisette.
- Le Saint-Régis – A classic Parisian café where you can enjoy a sit-down coffee. I love to have a café crème from here.
- Berthillon – Famous for ice cream, but also offering espresso and coffee drinks alongside its legendary scoops, making it a convenient stop for both caffeine and dessert.
Whether you want a quick takeaway coffee, a cozy café to linger in, or a sweet pairing of espresso and ice cream, Île Saint-Louis offers some of the best coffee experiences in Paris.
Shopping on Île Saint-Louis
The island is a wonderful place to wander and shop, with Paris boutiques and artisan stores that offer everything from gourmet food to unique gifts. Here you’ll find one-of-a-kind pieces, accessories, and elegant home décor, plus fun little kids gifts as well.
There are also several art galleries showcase both contemporary and classic works. Perfect for collectors or anyone who enjoys browsing unique Parisian art.

Specialty Food Shops
- La Ferme Saint-lAubin – A gourmet cheese shop perfect for picnic supplies with some of the most incredible cheeses on hand. The owner doesn’t speak a lot of English but he knows enough to give you what you want.
- Maison Moinet– Handcrafted chocolates and sweets to take home as souvenirs or even gifts. You can buy Vichy Basin pastille in anise, lemon, orange, and mint versions, which is what the store is known for. They are actually quite tasty and I like to always buy a few tins to bring back.
Fashion and Lifestyle Boutiques
- Pylones– Charming store full of unique one of a kind finds and curiosities. You can find souveniers here, gifts, and kids items.
- La Cabane de Louise– A home decor store full of the cutest items for every room in your home. I found some kitchen knives, a French calendar, and a few other kitchen gadets I brought back from here. It’s one of those stores where you don’t think you’ll find anything, and you end up finding more than you need.
- Laguiole en Aubrac– A cutlery store offering a wide selection of Laguiole knives handcrafted in accordance with French tradition.
